Homezones

Where would you rather live?

Here?

Or Here?

The photograph on the left shows a neighborhood in Manchester, England before it was converted to a "homezone"; the photograph on the left depicts the same street after conversion.

A homezone is a streetscape in which the needs of neighborhood residents are given equal weight to the needs of automobiles passing through the neighborhood. Homezones are a more holistic approach than traffic calming, in that they focus not only on slowing down cars, but also on opening up the street for social uses.

Pedestrians, cyclists, and playing children share the street space with vehicles on an equal basis. Trees, planters, public art, varied street surfaces, and signage all give drivers the message that they are guests, sharing the space with other users.

Homezones first originated in Holland and Germany, and have since caught on in the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe. The approach has had a marked success in residential neighborhoods heavily impacted by traffic.
