Father of Traffic Calming Revolution Visits Santa Cruz

As part of his United States tour in 2001, David Engwicht spoke at the Capitola Book Cafe at 7:30 p.m. on September 11 and at the Santa Cruz City Council Chambers at 7:00 p.m. on September 12 at a televised presentation before the Santa Cruz City Transportation Commission.

In addition, Engwicht conducted a Street Reclaiming Demonstration on the 300-400 blocks of Poplar Ave. on the eastside of Santa Cruz between noon and 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 12.

Engwicht's latest book, Street Reclaiming: Creating Livable Streets and Vibrant Communities was published in 1999. It proposed a radical new design process for our streets so they once again become places for community building. The book describes how residents can work to solve their own neighborhood traffic problems.

In 1988, Engwicht authored the now influential Traffic Calming: The Solution to Route 20 and a New Vision for Brisbane. This booklet is widely recognized as having triggered the Traffic Calming revolution in many cities in Australia and North America.

In 1992, disappointed with the way cities were implementing the concepts in Traffic Calming, Engwicht wrote Reclaiming our Cities and Towns (also published under the title Towards an Eco-City: Calming the Traffic) which went on to become a text in university courses.

David Engwicht lives in Bardon, Australia. To find out more about his ideas, visit his web site at www.lesstraffic.com.

Engwicht's visit to Santa Cruz County was sponsored by the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission and by the cities of Capitola and Santa Cruz.
